Abstract:

Literature entered American medical school curriculum during the medical humanities movement of the 1960s-70s, the result of which was the creation of the "discipline"Literature and Medicine. Albeit the first three decades’efforts in seeking its own methods and theories, Literature and Medicine was still at the periphery of medicine. In 2001, Rita Charon coined the term"Narrative Medicine", and enabled Literature and Medicine to take root in medical education and practice. This article aims at exploring the genesis and development of Literature and medicine and its turning to Narrative Medicine.
